Synopsis

J’entends les regards inouïs d’empaysement features Nadia, who dives into an exploration of identity through her body and what it represents, stemming from her love for the land and her attachment to Matane, her hometown. Her reflection is expressed through multiple voices. Ten women speak. Eight of them are originally from and/or currently live in Gaspésie, Bas-Saint-Laurent, and Saguenay. They share the same background as Nadia: one parent of European descent and the other of African descent. They grew up in a Quebecois, Francophone, Catholic, white family and cultural context, with little or no contact with the culture of their African-descended parent.

A word from Tënk

Nadia Gagné invites us into this choral creation through the river’s wind, the murmur of her voice, and the rhythm of the waves. She opens a window to be contemplated with closed eyes, a space of listening where we can experience difference in a regional context—a reality often made invisible in Quebec culture that we are finally allowed to hear. By giving the microphone to other women who share this duality between perceived identity and lived identity, she encourages an understanding of the complexities of belonging to a culture, a national history, and our ancestors. Through a non-linear, textured editing, the director allows us to be carried by the sonic poetry of the territory where she grew up.
