Synopsis
An “afronaut” emerges from the wreckage of his spaceship in the crater of Mount Nyiragongo. As he descends into the city below, encountering the people of present-day Goma, he begins to understand what he must do to change the future for his people.
A word from Tënk
Returning from space after a mission to protect natural resources, an astronaut comes back to the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Clad in a futuristic metallic suit, he wanders the streets under the amused and curious gaze of the residents. Quickly alienated by his neighbors and loved ones, he tries to find a way to reconnect with his identity and his roots. Mulika blurs the line between fiction and documentary with its Afrofuturist themes, using science fiction to explore real-world issues—namely, mineral exploitation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its repercussions on the people, who see no benefit from it.
