Synopsis
Taking place in a future that does not yet exist, Notes From Eremocene questions the ideal techno-optimistic model that lies ahead of us. From a curious, playful and critical standpoint, filmmaker Viera Čákanyová explores the potential of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence in dealing with complex global problems we humans create – climate change and the crisis of representative democracy. Combining diaristic film footage with 3D scanner images, Čákanyová poetically and forcefully stresses the inherent tension between the analogue and digital future of mankind.

In line with her previous two cinematic works (FREM and White on White), Slovak filmmaker Viera Čákanyová presents with Notes from Eremocene a fascinating documentary essay in which she continues to explore our relationship with the environment and technology. Through a unique aesthetic inquiry, this film transports us into a dystopian future where biodiversity continues to decline, while technologies have spiraled out of control. It is within this context that the post-human avatar of the filmmaker engages in a conversation with artificial intelligence, virtually immersing us in a memory that is both collective and individual. Visually, diverse analog and digital images, sometimes "datamoshed", are intricately woven together with rare insight, contributing to the creation of a complex, cerebral, playful, and sensitive narrative. Opening up rich reflections on economics, memory, the state of democracy, and humanity, this film offers a truly generous cinematic experience.
