Synopsis

Québec, on the cusp of the 1960s. The province is on the brink of momentous change. Deftly selecting clips from nearly 200 films from the National Film Board of Canada archives, director Luc Bourdon reinterprets the historical record, offering us a new and distinctive perspective on the Quiet Revolution.

A word from Tënk

Encapsulating an entire country through thousands of hours of National Film Board archives might be considered quixotic, but Luc Bourdon has taken on the challenge anyway. After his exploration of the 1950s with his 2008 film The Memories of Angels, the Québécois filmmaker now takes us into the 70s, a turning point both for societal norms and political movements in Quebec. From an Indigenous wedding to calls for terrorist action, from a drill rig in the North to a Stanley Cup hockey match, The Devil’s Share’s strength comes from its juxtaposition of moments from history, both major and mundane. Through hairstyles, fashions, and pop music, we witness all the upheaval of the era. This film is an altogether unique primer for understanding contemporary Quebec’s roots, and especially, its psyche.
